Suspension Question

It was suggested to me that while I am replacing the rear shocks I should add air shocks to help with trailer loads. I am under the impression that this is a wrong way to go, for this purpose. The vehicle is rated well above my intended tongue weight and gross towing needs. The rest of the suspension is in fair shape. Is there any merit to this idea? The vehicle was loaded with machinist tools, and other heavy objects and had some sag in the rear that made it obvious that it needed some suspension work. This vehicle has rear leaf springs, 91 cherokee.

Hi Dale. One thing I would consider is the strength of the body or frame that the shocks are mounted on. Air shocks can carry the extra wieght but it goes back to the weakest link in the chain theory

Re: Suspension Question

Go to a good spring shop and get your springs re-arched. Tell them your application and they can make that spring pack do anything you want.

You might also consider airbags. Brands are Firestone, Hellwig, and Airlift. These go on top of the springs and bolt to the frame. They do not go in place of your shocks.

Air shocks probably won't solve your issues.

Re: Suspension Question

Thanks guys. Like I said I have to replace the shocks anyways so I'll price them, both air and gas charged and see where the budget lies. I'm also going to look into replacing and or reworking the springs. Again thank you I didn't want to go that route without having heard someother opinions.

Dale T,

No one can recommend overloading your vehicle. On the other hand, the Cherokee is known for being a little light in the rear.

Shock absorber mounts ARE NOT DESIGNED to carry loads. They are only designed to hold the shock that dampens the suspension. You will break something with air shocks.

A better route is air bags. Check out the selections made by Air Lift, Inc.

Re: Suspension Question

djohns, what I meant was I may get air shocks for the ride factor. I initially thought that they weren't supposed to be used as a means to support weight. The answers here confirmed that idea. But I thank you for your reply.
