Has anyone else been receiving e-mails from "someone" looking to purchase an outboard motor so it can be shipped to Africa  ?
Have received several over the last couple days. Always a different womans name, apparently from New Jersey, trying to find a motor for her husband in Africa. Anyone know what that is all about? I'm wondering if contact info is somehow being derived from forums such as these and used for illicit activities. I don't need anymore junk e-mails for my IN BOX.

They usually get email addresses from web site "guest books" - if you are ever viewing a guest book, look for the name "Mugu Guyman" or the words, "mugu keep off", or long strings of vowels like oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. If you've ever left an email address in a guest book, prepare to be bombarded with Nigerian scam mails.

"Mugu" is Nigerian slang for "fool" and "guyman" is how scammers refer to themselves and each other. "keep off" indicates to any other guymen that the addresses on that list have been recently harvested. Repeated vowels are used sort of like exclamation points.

The scam is they will arrange to buy a motor from you with a bogus certified check written for an amount much higher than the asking price of your motor. They will then ask you to wire them the excess amount directly to them from your bank account. After you wire them the excess amount their bogus certified check bounces and you're out the excess money plus you have shipped them the motor and paid the freight on it. Even worse they now have your bank account number for use in other potential frauds.

Many folks have been scammed this way. An article just came out in the papers about this and many other Nigerian frauds. Don't ever reply to them. Delete it right away.

These Nigerian scams have been going on for at least 6 years that I know of here in Idaho. It really surprises me how people still fall for them. You've got to remember, if it sounds to good to be true...Forget it, leave it alone.
