Suzuki 115 Carb Rebuild -- HELP!!!

I have a Suzuki DT115 '85 year. I just pulled the carbs apart, and one of the main jets is stuck in the JEt Nozzle. Is this a major problem? Should I replace that nozzle and jet with a new one, or just not take that one apart and clean out the jet port?

Also, the manual says to lightly seat the pilot screws and count the number of turns till they seat so that they can be installed to exactly the same position. Mine were already seated all the way to the carb body. Could this contribute to the problems that I was having (skipping and no WOT).

Please advise as quick as possible. I would like to get the rig back together and in the water by Saturday.

Thanks guys, Knightgang

If the jet is stuck, it will cause a problem. Soaking with liquid wrench should lossen. If not, get a new one. While some carb cleaner is OK, cleaning with high grade gas will work just as well. High pressure air is also helpful. Suggest backing out 1 1-2 to 1- 3/4 turn on the screws if seated. Depending on the condition of the motor, this should provide enough fuel/air mixture. Not sure the exact, so follow the manual. If you were having power problems, I would also suggest checking the fuel bulb, screens, fule/water filter. Also, check the prop hub as well. In gear, try to turn it.

Carbs should always be cleaned and dried of anything but gas. Seat the gaskets with a thin coat of lube/grease for a great seal. No sealant required. I have found that ether works well for cleaning, but do not use as a starter agent on that motor. If it is slow to start, fill a soft plastic bottle with good fuel, poke a small hole at the top and give the carbs a spray before starting, do not soake. Also, pump up the bulb hard, then one extra.

;)

Thanks Thom. Maybe I should have clarified the "stuck" issue. The slot in the main jet is stripped. The hole in the jet is open and all passages look good. Just due to the stripped slot, I can't get it out of the nozzle.

BTW, you are just up the road from me. We should get together and go fish sometime. Whatta think?

Eric

The manual I believe is referring to the idle air screw which screws in horizontal in an opening just above the carb throat when looking directly into the carb throat. This screw meters air into the idle mixture. Unscrewing (counterclockwise) it will add more air leaning out the idle mixture. The manual is suggesting you count the number of turns to seat the idle screw so that you can return it to the same position which is OK if it was set right beforehand but since your motor isn't running right it may not be. The book will tell you what the factory number of turns should be, set it according to that.

The pilot jet screws in tight vertically from the top of the carb more or less in the center of the top. It sounds like you are referring to the pilot jet which should just be removed and cleaned and re-installed tight. These are open to the air and can get clogged with crud and oil dripping from above.

Back to the main jet in the bottom of the carb bowl. If the main jet orifice isn't damaged from the previous attempts to remove it (look carefully) you can probably leave it alone and just give it a good cleaning with spray carb cleaner and compressed air (probably give it a little more attention than the others to make sure crud isn't stuck above it somewhere). While you are in there I assume that you are replacing the floats and adjusting them to factory spec, right? Use the new gaskets that came with your rebuild kit.

The hole emulsion tube(spelling?)should come out with a 10 mm socket with the jet still in it.

Yep, I got that out. I finished the rebuild last Saturday and went to the river. The skip was still there. As it turn out, the plug wire caps were bad. Brown's Point Marina said that the coils do not come with the wire caps, and that they can easily be replaced by unscrewing the caps from the end of the wires. i have new caps on the way.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I think that the skipping will go away as soon as the wire caps arrive.
Knightgang
