suzuki 115 repair or replace?

i just bought a v 20 wellcraft with a 1994 115 suzuki that was overheated. i knew that going into the sale. i'm trying to keep things cheap (less than 2000 dollars) as my co owner is getting married i'm a mechanic but dont know much about suzuki engines. should i buy a new powerhead for the engine or go for another engine such as a evinrude or merc? any opinions would be helpful

Have you ran a compression check to see how bad it is?

i did not check the compression because someone had removed half the headbolts and snapped some off in the process, however i did remove the head and the cylinder walls looked clean with no scatches but the bottom cylinder has some surface rust where the head gasket let go. the engine does turn and is not ceased
