Rookie Move!

Hi I have had some recent problems with my 55 hp 1989 Suzuki

Preliminary problems were Water Warning light and buzzer have been ringing and I witnessed the first revolution limiting function (much bogging and 2/3 power)on the motor. Excellent feature, needless to say it is the result of a bigger problem - being that it is a water warning I proceeded to try and remove the impeller - Rookie move - To remove the clutch shaft is virtually impossible because the screws are very difficult to get at! As I removed the 8 bolts plus the rear bolt I saw that the impeller assembly was sitting on top of a shift rod guide. I loosened the bolts on the impeller thinking that I could possibly remove the shift rod from the bottom instead of the top. The assembly dropped but the clutch rod came up.. Eventually I struggled to remove the clutch shaft assembly (removing the 3 screws holding it down). It looks like I should be able to replace the impeller with a kit (one of the rubber corners was in fact broken off) however I believe I have pulled the clutch rod out of position which would me that I may have to re/re the transmission assembly to put the clutch rod back in place... I am getting a manual in the meantime....

Can someone confirm that my suspicions are correct. Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi,

If the gear rod came loose in lower unit You must tear down the whole lower unit to get the spring, ball and rod in place again.
I suggest a Suzuki marine mechanic for that job.
