suzuki 4 stroke 40hp only goes to 2800 rpm

I bought a 4 stroke in 2000. My brother, who was my fishing partner contracted cancer and I only used my boat a couple times. I have now moved to Florida and took the engine in for repair and it starts ok but can't get up to 5800 rpm like it should. I think it may be the spark plugs but not sure. Anyone have any ideas? You say it only goes to 2800RPM - does it come up to 2800 and start to stutter? Is the temp or oil alarm going off also? If no alarm or warning light, than the neutral safety switch is sticking and the ECU thinks the engine is still in neutral and therefore will limit the engine speed to about 2800RPM.

Thanks for replying. When I start the engine it starts up real quick. When I lift the lever at top to increase the throttle it doesn't increase hardly at all. When I hit the level hard or jiggle it up then the motor runs higher. That's all when it is in neutral.<br /><br />When I put it into gear it goes well in lower speeds up to a point about 1/2 up and from 1/2 up to full down it does not increase at all. <br /><br />I thought it may be the fuel injectors so I bought high octane gas treatment. I figure if I run it alot it will burn any build up. Thus, I leave it running at the dock for long periods of time in nuetral. i.e. 30 minutes or so.<br /><br />Thanks for your help.<br /><br />dan

I forgot to mention what you asked. No there are no alarms and no warning lights. The RPM just stays around 2400-2800. The engine does sputter at times until I run it for about 30 minutes then it doesn't sputter.<br /><br />Thanks.

Bring it to a qualified Suzuki tech. You may have a number of fuel problems related to lack of use. It also sounds like you may have a control box or cable adjustment problem.
