Re: suzuki 40 oil injection older model lots of question
serial number is 04003 - 505534
Dont know the year or anything
----------

Hi,
It is 1985 or 1995 (- 5...)
1983-1988: Light grey/silver color.
1989-2001: Grey-green color.

Dad bought the boat 2nd hand and got no manuals etc..
Dad has now given me the boat.
As far as i know...

The lower end oil has never been changed...should I flush and change or just change? and with what oil?
------------
A manual for the outboard is very good to have. You can buy it at any Suzuki marine shop. It will be a very good thing to have one.

Changing lower unit oil:
With the outboard in vertical position place a can under the lower unit, loose the lower drain plug/screw, and then open the upper vent plug/screw and let all lower unit oil drain (may take 5-10 min). Fill from lower hole until it flow over in upper hole (it is goint to be little messy but it will work - yes, that is the way it is done) and then fasten the upper plug/screw, then do the same with lower screw. Notice You should change to a new gasket on the lower plug, but it might work with the old gasket if it is in good shape. It would probably be around 5-6 decilitre of new oil to fill.
It is outboard transmission fluid You buy at marine shop or possibly at gas stations. In my country (Sweden) many gas stations has outboard oils, like for lower unit (and also 2-stroke outboard oil for the gas).

What is the oil reservoir size?
-------
For the 2-stroke outboard oil, maybe around 2 litre (possibly as much as 3 litre) for this size outboard (I had a Suzuki DT65, 1991, and around 3 litre 2-stroke marine outboard oil to get it full if I remember right).

How much oil should be used for how much gas? Right now I have a 6 gallon tank
--------
Since it is an oil injection outboard You have now the oil from the resevoir under the cowl will be mixed in the gas automatic for You. So You have only gas in the gas tank then.
Only if you disconnect the oil injection system You MUST premix 2-stroke outboard oil in the gas tank directly in mixture 100:1 (gas

il), so that is 1% of oil - if you forget that in this case the outboard will be history since it will not get lubrication. In Your case that would be 1% of 6 gal (use a calculator - we use metric only here in Sweden... litre You know).

Does this model have an alternator for charging?
---------
Yes. On all Suzuki electric start models.

It starts right away and I can pull start it just as easy
It does not have a tiller handle.
-------
OK, You have a steering wheel then.

Since the status of maintenance of this outboard seems unknown I would have a marine shop change to a new impeller. Since the impeller, rubber wheel, that pump water so the outboard gets cooling is very important and it could be in bad shape I would not chance it is OK. It is better to assume it is not OK and get a new. Then You can use the outboard for many years without worrying about this rubber wheel.
Try to lubricate all the grease points with marine grease.
Make sure the pee hole is not clogged, when You run the outboard it should be a steady strem out of water from the small pee hole. It gets rather easy glogged and if that happen try a thin wire from outside into the hole so any dirt can come out (it happaned to my Suzuki outboard a couple of times)

Thanks!!
---------

Good luck!
