Hi, I bought a new 4hp Suzuki last year as a trolling motor. A friend says it's exactly the same as the 5hp and can be modified, he thinks by altering the position of the throttle cable.
Looking at the manual the only difference appears to be that the 5hp runs 500rpm higher at
maximum revs. All other values are the same. anyone out there who can advise me?

Perhaps you don't come under the auspices of the EU or EPA there. Here, the first time we modify anything built since '98, it's a $5000 fine; the second time it's $10,000. Third time is jail time. Can you understand reticence in answering your question?

wow! I thought it was just this side of the pond where big brother, nanny state had taken over. I look upon you as still being the land of the free - whatever happened to personal freedom of choice??

Why would you get fines for modifying an engine, if it's your property can't you do with it whatever you want? Lucky for me where I live we can get away with absolutely anything .... anyway ... bananas .... you can modify any engine, but you don't wanto do it with these low HP engines as it decrease their life span, you must remember that they are built the way they are for a reason and to make your engine only 1 hp faster is just not worth it. If you modify the position of the throttle cable it will just make this little engine work harder and will end up blowing it up, these engine (4hp & 5hp) might look exactly the same but there is very little different things that makes them different from one another. I suggest just leaving it as is .... if it works leave it alone.
