I'm planning on re-powering with either the Suzuki or it's white twin, the Johnson 140 4-stroke. Do any of you have experience with these engines and if so, what size/type/weight boat, performance/speed? My boat currently runs around 46 mph (gps) w/115 Merc 2-stroke. Anyone care to speculate how fast with the Suziki/Johnson 140? I realize there are a lot of variables, just ball park.
Thanks,
JD

You may find better warranty, parts, tech service and repair service with the Johnson.

Hi,
Some indication a test I read can be of some help.
Your 46 MPH = 40 KPH (knots).

Same boat (Crescent Dorado V23, 6.16 x 2.35m, 23 degrees V-shaped hull, 770 kg without outboard) tested with Suzuki DF90, DF115 and DF140.
doradov23.jpg

DF90, 2 persons onboard
a) Knots:

Max* rpm: 32 knots
- 500 rpm: 28,8
-1000 rpm: 25,4
-1500 rpm: 20,6
-2000 rpm: 15,2
* In this test 5200 rpm.

b) Liter/nautical mile:

Max rpm: 1,08 l/nm
- 500 rpm: 1,05
-1000 rpm: 0,91
-1500 rpm: 0,85
-2000 rpm: 0,89

c) Decibel:

Max rpm: 85 dB
- 500 rpm: 84
-1000 rpm: 81
-1500 rpm: 81
-2000 rpm: 78

DF115, 2 persons onboard
a) Knots:

Max* rpm: 36,2 knots
- 500 rpm: 34,4
-1000 rpm: 30,3
-1500 rpm: 26,4
-2000 rpm: 21,0
* In this test 5800 rpm.

b) Liter/nautical mile:

Max rpm: 1,14 l/nm
- 500 rpm: 1,09
-1000 rpm: 0,99
-1500 rpm: 0,92
-2000 rpm: 0,82

c) Decibel:

Max rpm: 86 dB
- 500 rpm: 85
-1000 rpm: 83
-1500 rpm: 82
-2000 rpm: 80

DF140, 2 persons onboard
a) Knots:

Max* rpm: 38,1 knots
- 500 rpm: 36,3
-1000 rpm: 32,8
-1500 rpm: 29,2
-2000 rpm: 25,1
*In this test 6100 rpm.

b) Liter/nautical mile:

Max rpm: 1,14 l/nm
- 500 rpm: 1,10
-1000 rpm: 1,04
-1500 rpm: 0,98
-2000 rpm: 0,90

c) Decibel:

Max rpm: 86 dB
- 500 rpm: 85
-1000 rpm: 84
-1500 rpm: 83
-2000 rpm: 81

Notice how the DF140 can have a good speed even when you decrease rpm by 2000 rpm compared to the DF115 and DF90.

Also, the DF140 will be better with more people onboard since it has more power to deliver compared to a 115 hp outboard.

There is also the new Honda BF150 and new Yamaha F150 in this class of 4-strokes to consider, but I belive they are rather much more expensive.

I do not know if your boat will be faster with a Suzuki DF140 but probably some knots faster at full rpm. But I'm sure it will be faster at lower rpm like minus 2000 rpm compared to your present 115 hp outboard, at least when you are many persons like 4-6 persons onboard because it has better force.
Hope it helps some.
/Bo

Re: Suzuki DF140 4-stroke

Thanks for the help guys, I've read all the performance reports I can get my hands on. I was hoping someone may have first-hand experience. I can't find a good boat comparison/test to what I have. By re-powering I want to get the advantages of 4-stroke plus going from a 115 to a 140 should give m a little more top end? I know the 4-stroke will idle smoother, use less gas, etc. I'm hoping to go faster too. The question is, "how much faster"?

JD

Re: Suzuki DF140 4-stroke

JD_:

I traded for one of the Johnson 140 4-strokes last spring and could not be happier. The engine is mounted on a Triton Bayflight 18 (18') center console saltwater boat. It tops out at 46 mph. Suzuki has several boat tests on their web sites and one of the boats may be similar to yours. I chose the Johnson brand because their are few Suzuki dealers in this area. Also, I was trading in a blown Ficht 175 and the local Johnson dealer (who sold it to me originally) would trade. The trim switches on the throttle control burned out until the dealer supplied a relay kit. Seems the Suzuki trim circuit is a little hotter than the normal Johnson. Engine is very quiet and very good on fuel. I purhcased the shop manual and special valve tools so that I can adjust the valves myself. Attention to detail on the engine is excellent.

I began looking at 115's however, the 140 four strokes are slightly lighter than the 115s.

Incidentally, the Ficht 175 was about 15 mph faster.

aero 320,
How much does your boat weigh? What size/pitch prop are you running?
JD

Re: Suzuki DF140 4-stroke

JD_, the hull weighs 1600 lbs. The prop is the 14" x 20" stainless that Johnson supplies it is a three blade. At wot the engine turns 6250 when trimmed out. Supposedly, these lower units are geared down to permit handling the larger diameter props producing less slippage. Engine is mounted on 6" manual jack plate and boat has Bennett trim tabs (mainly because I place a 30 gallon bait tank at the rear of the boat for striper fishing).

Re: Suzuki DF140 4-stroke

Thanks for responding, all the info is helpful. The nearest Suzuki dealer is over 100 miles away. It will most probably be a Johnson because there are 3 dealers nearby + Bombardier's recent 3+2 warranty/rebate offer.
JD
