Suzuki df140 gear grind question.

Hello all,
I know that its kinda normal for outboard to have somewhat of a gear grind when putting into (forward/reverse) gear. There was a time when my gear shifting was smooth as butter but now has a "clank & grind" when shifting back and forth. What can I do or check so I can reduce this grind as much as possible.

Thanks

Re: Suzuki df140 gear grind question.

Suzuki has a spring action shifting mechanism, which helps the gears not to grind when the throttle control is used slowly. Sounds like you already damaged some gears probbly the pinion gear. I would recommend getting a lower unit oil change to see if you have any metal shavings in the oil also check the lower unit oil color when you drain it. If you have metal shavings or milky like oil, you need to get your lower unit serviced, they might have to change the stripped gear or gears and re shim it. If you dont want to do all that... try to shift into gear faster, that will help a little but won't fix the problem. Good luck

Re: Suzuki df140 gear grind question.

I just serviced my lower unit. Drained the lower unit oil and it look crystal clear nice and golden color no metal shavings. I took it apart and cleaned all the components and replaced all the seals and empeller, etc. re-greased all the gears put new gear oil in it and put it back on. The 1st couple of times I put it in gear you could barely even hear it go into gear but now all of a sudden it kinda clanks. Maybe I need to adjust some cables or something like that? Suggestions?

Thanks again

Did you shim it? If you did not or did.. on Suzukis you can't stack shims. On Suzi's you have to shim 4 times... pinion, forward, reverse, prop shaft end play.
And pinion gear nut needs to be changed everytime it comes off.

Re: Suzuki df140 gear grind question.

I thought about the shims but when reassembling the lower unit I double checked all shim tolerances and they where all within design specification thickness. Not really sure the shimming is causing this....is there other things I could look for or adjust like he gear (froward/reverse) engagement cables and natural switch? Maybe the neutral switch is being release too soon?

Just brain storming.
