Suzuki DF140 Lower Unit problem

Since I picked up my new 2007 Suzuki DF140 about 1 month ago it has had two problems. Now I think they may be related. When it is idling and I move the throttle back about 35 degrees it smoothly snaps into reverse like it is supposed to. When it is idling and I move the throttle forward it goes into forward almost immediately. If it is in forward and I move the throttle to the straight up "neutral position" it will usually stay in forward gear and to get it to shift to neutral I have to move the throttle a little toward reverse and then back to straight up. The second problem I thought was the neutral safety switch. Often to get it to start (allow the starter to activate) I have to push the throttle just a little toward the reverse position. I took the throttle apart and bypassed the neutral safety switch and that made no difference. I still had to put reverse pressure on the throttle to allow the starter moter to work even with the switch bypassed(bridged).

Now I think I have a much bigger problem. Had it out the other day and all of a sudden it just stopped. I was not in the boat but the driver said it made a loud noise and just stopped. After "jiggleing" the throttle toward reverse it started again but it is now making all kinds of clanking sounds when it is idling in neutral. Sounds like its comeing from around the base of the powerhead. Oil in engine is full. I drained out a little of the lower unit oil and it seemed a little dirty but no water or metal shavings. It has about 20 hours on it. I was planning on having it adjusted at the 20 hour service check. I love the way it runs and the fuel efficience is unbelieveable. I'm taking it in to local Suzuki dealer in a few days. Anyone have any comments? Thanks in advance

Re: Suzuki DF140 Lower Unit problem

I would take in in ASAP without touching it "unless you did the cable rigging and binnacle adjustment". Kinda sounds like the cables are not adjusted correctly. The clanking may be do to something loose.
Take it in and have the dealer trouble-shoot it. Its in warranty, and its usually not a good idea for the owner to tamper with the motor when its in warranty. Dealers don't like that.
Good luck

small comment to first part; u have one more switch on engine for in-gear-starting-protection. thats why it didnt help that u disconnected the one in the shifter.

about the bad noise, dont touch, get it to dealer asap!

kind regards
