Suzuki DF60 Leaking Oil any ideas?

Greetings,

I'm half owner on a skiff with a Suzuki 60 hp 4 stroke it's a 2001. My brother and I picked it up from his Father in Law this spring. The motor has less then 50 hours on it total.

My brother was using it this weekend out hunting and noticed a light sheen around the boat. He assumed it was from his kid fueling the kicker. They ran the boat and it's running great. Then they got a shutdown and low oil warning. The motor was about out of oil. They added 4 quarts  So they watched it closely and the level continued to creep down the dipstick.

I got home from the weekend on my boat and he called me over. We drained the oil and it was clean not milky at all. But there was oil on the water intake slots on the lower unit. He swore that the oil was coming from there. I couldn't see how he would have oil in the intake but I humored him and we pulled the lower unit.

We found that the exhaust cavity had some milky oil residue but more a light coating not gobs or anything. Then we pulled the impeller and there was oil in there??

The drive shaft was dry no oil in there.

Any ideas where/how the oil is going to end up in the water pump? I haven't done a compression check yet, but he says it's running great.

Thanks for help!

Have no idea, this should be interesting. Like having oil in your truck engine migrating to the differential. Two different units. Only thing I can remotely think of the oil is being pushed out the exhaust and being picked up by pump water pick up while you are idling. Keep us informed please. FRED

I am having the same problem with my DT-140 Suzuki, notice a sheen in the water and oil under the motor where I park the trailer, only
had the boat out twice this spring and the second time out I got the low oil alarm and when I checked the dip stick it was dry.
I have it in the shop right now and I will let you know when they find.

Thanks! I look forward to hearing what they say. Our Suzuki dealer said it would be 6-8 weeks before they could look at it. So we are going to start troubleshooting it ourselves.

Just an update,

We put the lower unit back on last night, did a compression test on all 4 cylinders 180,165,175,185. So they all check out.

Started it with the muffs on and a bucket catching the "pee water" that was clean but there is a steady sheen coming out though the prop (exhaust).

Still working on ideas before we tear into it. We would really like to have an idea before we just get a seal kit and tear it apart. if nothing else so that we do discover the problem not just fix it.

Here's the latest - We took the lower part of the motor apart - Removed the Powerhead and set it aside, removed the engine holder and the oil pan. Cleaned and inspected them and replaced the gaskets. Nothing found there.

So we started the motor with the hose connected to the flush port without the lower unit attached. The motor fired right up and ran for about 10 minutes without leaking any oil. Then the Thermostat opened and the flood gates opened, we had oil leaking. We shut it down and let it cool and tried it again. Sure enough once the thermostat opens the oil starts leaking. Then once we finally turned off the water big globs of cottage cheese looking oil/water started spilling out backwards.

Cracked block? No water whatsoever in the oil.

I have just discovered the same problem with a '03 140 Suzuki. I am getting, as you discribed, an oil sheen from the exhaust and using oil. I will be call my mechanic on Monday. I am interested in any further news from you and I will do the same as this develops. I did notice about ine year a go a change in the way the exhaust sounded but could not find any reason for it. I wonder if this is connected?
