Engine : 2003 suzuki df70

Several weeks ago when the engine was cold I tried to tilt the engine down and the switch was dead. The battery was reading fine, and so I tried the tilt switch on the motor and had the same problem. I tried again and it worked fine. the battery leads and all connections looked fine too. No problems again until this weekend.

I had been underway, anchored, the engine cooled, and then after I started up again and had been trawling for about 20 mins I gave the engine some throttle. It took fine initialy and then about four mins later I heard a quick beep and the engine just shut off. I then went to tilt the engine up to inspect the intakes and such and I encountered the same problem - no tilt. About 20 seconds later the engine tilted fine, and there were no obstructions, good fuel connection, and good oil. I turned it back on and payed careful attention to what happened next.

I kept it at low rpms and every thing seemed normal, but as soon as I gave it some throttle it did the same thing again. It shut right down, and I noticed the temp light flashed with the single beep again. I checked the tilt trim and it was again dead. After a couple seconds it worked and I tilted up the engine and took off the cover and felt the engine block. It didn't feel hot at all.

I waited a while, scratching my head and started up to head home. I kept the rpms low and kept feeling the heat and the telltale stream (though I know that is before the thermostat) and there were no more shutdowns. Eventually, I tried slowly increasing the throttle until I kept it at high rpms for a long while with no problems. It seemed normal.

So I'm stuck. I can't tell if this is a temp issue, or if it is some sort of sudden loss of power. Does anyone have any thoughts? I know the temp alarm is only supposed to drop the rpms, and since it didn't feel hot, I am confused by the alarm and shut down. Could there be some sort of power lead issue?

thanks..

hello
sounds like a loose connection. usually the beep is a selftest. when the connection is lost the alarm sees it as a key on and tests. is your ign switch inside the control box?
good luck and keep posting

Re: suzuki df70 shutdown and then no power

Thanks for the reply.

yes, I believe the iginition switch is inside the control box. If the powerloss effected the tilt/trim switch at the motor and both leads coming off the battery were secure, am I right in assuming that any loose connection must be located within the engine, or would a break in the curcuit at the control box shut out the power to the tilt trim as well? (I will test this senario next time).

Does anyone know of any alarms that would beep once, show the temp light, and then just shutdown the motor?

Thanks again for the help. Aside from this small issue I've been nothing but completely thrilled with this motor.

Bad power connections at the engine - most likely the ground cable.

Check the battery cables, if the problem continues, it will kill the ecm. I see a lot of this with spliced battery cables. Copper termials on the battery cable not good either. Check all electrial cable connections on engine.
