Suzuki DT 50

I just got a bass boat from my uncle who had stored it outside for several years. He recently started it and said that the motor started in gear, instead of neutral and he didn't know why. Anyway, he's letting me use the boat, but I have no knowledge of outboards. It is one of those aluminum Tracker Bass Boats with a suzuki DT 50 motor on it. I know there will be a lot of cosmetic work to do (seats are bad and the wood floor is warped) but can anyone give me some advice on what my first steps should be so I get fishing!?
