Suzuki DT-60 not starting/odd revs issue

Hi, this is my first post so please be gentle! I will try to be as thorough as possible.

We recently(as complete novices with no idea) bought a ski boat, with an 83/84 dt-60 outboard.

It was ticking over quite roughly, but always started first time. a chap on the berth next to us suggested it was "missing".

However when you gave it plenty of throttle, it seemed to run very smoothly and powerfully.

Then, for some reason, while you had been running it at, say, 3/4 throttle, and lightly eased off the throttle by, say, as little as 10%, the engine revs would drop hugely and go all the way down to idle. pushing the throttle back up wouldn't necessarily make it rev higher again, and in some cases it would take as much as 30 seconds before it would suddenly roar back into life.

this was the first problem.

the second, is that now it won't start, fullstop. Also for some unbeknown reason the ignition alarm(which i'm assuming is for oil ? ) sometimes comes on for now reason. When you turn the engine you can hear it make one revolution - slowly), then it eventually does it again. It doesn't appear to be firing(i am a novice but it doesn't go chugga chugga then stop as if it was fuel starvation), simply just slowly turns once.

I have done the following:

checked and charged battery.
removed plugs and cleaned them(they weren't too bad a little oily perhaps but this is a 2 stroke)

can anyone suggest what may be happening?

I have been advised to check the plugs by trying to spark them off the engine(away from any fuel) which i will do this weekend, but if the plugs ARE sparking, when do I go from there - and why does the oil alarm(if that is what it is) keep going off when it is full?

just to add, i am aware of the autochoke and it is working.

this is a a key start model with "press in choke"
Many thanks in advance for your help.

Dean

ps: i would like to add that i am a complete novice so the mroe detail in your explanation the better!! I have no mechanical background knowloedge whatsover, but am keen to learn as much as possible.

First off these motors are not for repair by amateurs. The problems you have are many. Before you start it must me made to turn over then you need to do a compression test. From this you will have some idea whether it is worth spending money on. From your phraseology I would say that you are not from the US. No problem I am an ex limey. A manual is a must if you want want to get serious.
