Hi, I have a Suzuki DT65 which starts fine and will run on full throttle at about 25 knots for 5- 10 minutes and will then lose power and only run at about 1/3rd power or 8-10 knots despite the throttle lever not being moved. If I switch the engine off and restart in a couple of minutes it will run again and then do the same. I have checked the fuel filter and it seems clean...help:confused:

sounds like it is going into overheat mode. Check your water pump.

Cheers for the suggestion. I had in my mind that it may be a temporary fuel blockage i.e. some dirt in one of the carbs that maybee got sucked upo at high revs, and then dropped when it was switched off. Is it ok to run through a carb cleaner such as redex or could this damage the engine.

I like to use seafoam on my motors.
if you do a search for seafoam on this site you will find a good guide on how to use it. Basically 3/4 gallon gas,1 bottle seafoam and then idle for 15 minutes and then wait 15 minutes and then run again for 15 minutes. Do this until the heavier smoke stops. this stuff is amazing for decarbing engines and restoring power on any engine. I use it in my truck, lawnmower, weed whacker etc.
it is also a fuel stabiliser and good for winter storage.

Do you have a good telltale stream?
Are the cylinders very hot when the motor backs off?

Re: Suzuki DT 65 full throttle problems

Cheers for the advice I will have a search for this product. The tell tale has always been a bit weak but I was led to believe that Suzukis didnt have a strong jet, and that the exhaust port below the main cowl was the one to check. Water comes out of there no problem and you can feel that it is warm. I have not felt the temperature of the cylinders but I will check next time I run it. Is there a way to clean out the tell tale if it is blocked?? would this make the engine overheat if it is blocked??

Cheers

nooo, the tell tale must not be weak, suzuki's have a strong stream out the tell tale ..... if you think it might be blocked take a thin wire and stick it in there while the motor is running, wiggle it around, if it does not improve .... it is time to change your impellar ......

Is there an overheat alarm that would sound?? I know there is an oil alarm which sounds at first when the ignition is turned on, but I have not head any other alarm on the engine. Is it easy to change / check the impeller??

Thanks

Re: Suzuki DT 65 full throttle problems

yes it is very easy. just a couple things you really want to watch for,
DO NOT pull at all on the shift rod. I did this and the ball comes out and is a real pain to reset. the other I did wrong at first on my 55 was the linkage by the throttle and shift cable. you need to loosen the nut so the shift rod can drop. If yours is the same its kind of hard to see. I think they tell you to put it in reverse for this procedure.

Good luck

Re: Suzuki DT 65 full throttle problems

Sorry to jump in here but I am having the same prob and just wanted to clarify. after you undo the linkage under the carbs to let the rod drop does this entire rod come out? Or is there another connection that this allows you to get to? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Suzuki DT 65 full throttle problems

Hi, just to update. Changed the plugs as part of a general service and also renewed the fuel pump diaphrams. unscrewed the bowl screw on each carb and filled with carb cleaner. (dont have the confidence to remove them). The tell tale was completely blocked with muck and is now running fine. I tried the engine and did about 15 miles of trouble free running. I thought I had solved the problem but then I used the boat a few days later and the same thing happened again, running fine and then revs dropping. Stop the motor and restart, runs for a while then revs drop again. The water running from the tell tale and main vent are warm and flowing freely although the tell tale speed varies. Would the thermostat affect this?? I have removed the float sensor on the top cylinder (this engine only has one) it seemed in tact but not sure what this does or how to test it.
On another point on the oil sensor / filter there are two wires. One black and one is pink with a blue stripe. The in line connector on the pink and blue one was not connected - I have reconnected it but not had chance to check the engine running again. What does this wire do - could this affect the motor.

All suggestions welcome.
