Suzuki DT5Y Issues

I have a 2000 DT5Y, with very low hours on it (under 30 hrs total).

The motor runs fine at low and top end, but sometimes it just dies when I put a load on it (it will idle fine on the water, but as soon as I put it in gear and try to open the throttle, it dies). This doesn't happen on every use, but has happened a couple times.

Also, I have noticed that if the motor is idling (when flushing motor) and I revv it up two or three times, it gets "stuck" on high revv, and builds up to a very loud crescendo, and then goes back down to normal idling noise.

It makes a hell of a racket, but there is no excessive smoke or anything else. Just the loud noise.

As mentioned above, it has been used sparingly, always with the proper mix of gas, etc. The spark plug looks clean (no fouling), there are no oil leaks anywhere, and the water pump seems to work fine (it trickles water, rather than squirt it strongly).

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Re: Suzuki DT5Y Issues

Never rev an outboard beyond about 1500rpm without a load on it MVP.

What you are getting is thermal runaway. You are very lucky it runs short of fuel flow and slows down. A very common result of thermal runaway is a blown up engine.
