Hi,

I have a suzuki dt65, im fairly sure its a later model, perhaps early 90's. It has oil injection and is the darker colourm, not the light grey/blue.

I got the engine after it had been owned by someone clueless for a year or 2, so i dropped the gearbox off and replaced the impeller, took the engine out and it was pumping water fine.

But then under hard acceleration the tell tale becomes bloced with a sandy residue, i stop the boat, poke it clear and its fine again but it jusrt keeps doing this. The water coming out of the tell tale/exhaust is also very hot and will actually steam if i go fast for a prolonged period.

Ive taken the plate off by the side of the engine to see if the water jacket is salted up but it doesnt look to bad at all?!

So what could the problem be? obviously the water isnt circulating properly but how do i find where its blocked?

Any help much appreciated

You need to pull and replace or at least test the Thermostat and while you have it out drop the lower unit and try flushing the cooling system out with a water hose. Maybe it will remove some of the stuff that keeps plugging the tell tail. Inspect the passages while out and pull the head to clean if too much corrosion internally. That motor may have internal anodes that are falling apart and need replacing. You will need to get a manual for you specific motor and see what it says

Sounds like this motor might be a good candidate for that "Saltaway" flushing treatment. Maybe run motor in a barrel with chemical in it until most of those fine sand-like particles are gone. Of course good to check/replace thermostat also. Good Luck!

Saltaway is just an acid. Run motor in a 50 gallon drum of water and add a quart or 2 of muriatic acid(hardware store) to 50 gallons of water, watch for foaming action of the acid on the calcium/mineral deposits, run 15 minutes, add bicarbonate of soda to neutralize acid with motor still running for 15 more minutes, add dish detergent to flush with motor still running, until water out of the motor is clear. I have 13 years of chemical water treatment experience and have cleaned many heat exchangers, HVAC units, cooling systems, boilers with this method. Just try to keep the acid only strong enough to move the mineral deposits and neutralize as mentioned. Good Luck!
