Suzuki steering problem.....

Hi

I have a 40hp Suzuki 2 stroke engine on my boat and am having a problem - when I turn the wheel to full starboard the engine sticks in that position and has to be moved by hand. It's getting kinda dodgy when mooring - especially when there's a lot of boats around. I've asked a few people but all they suggest is oil/grease etc. Any ideas folks?

Cheers:)

i would guess that your cable is sticking. i would unhook it at the motor and move the motor by hand, if ti is free than its you cable, or helm. you will have to remove it and clean the cable and tube it slides in, if it still sticks could be in the helm,. if so i would replace the cable and helm.

It moves fine until full starboard, then the only way to move it is to move the motor by hand. Turning the helm just clicks. Will try and disasemble the system and clean it.

Thanks :)

FanadMan,
It sounds like your cable is broke. It will still turn (pushing the cable) one direction because it will push the broken end through still. When you go to turn the other direction (pulling the cable) it leaves the broken end in place. Pull the cable and look at it. I am sure it is broken. Good Luck.

Sounds like the steering cable is stripped.

It could be stripped but unlikely to turn one direction and not the other without feeling it in the steering wheel. My cable was broke and I could turn to the right fine but had nothing at all when turning left. If these are the same symptons you are experiencing I still bet my money the cable is broke. Either way, it needs to be replaced. Good Luck.
