I have the chance to pick up a running 100HP Johnson outboard for $250. Seems like I'm going to spend at least that to get the 105HP Chrysler - currently on my boat - running. I'm thinking about picking up the Johnson to swap on the boat, then work on the Chrysler at my liesure to get it running again for either a backup, or to sell. Any thoughts?

Here's a little background: I recently picked up a boat that has a 105 HP Chrysler outboard. The engine is giving me a heck of a time to start. Prior owner says it's been running but I have my doubts. There's spark, compression and it's getting fuel but won't fire up. I have a post in the Chrysler & Force board as I keep working on it.

Thanks in advance!

you will need Johnson/Evinrude controls. Yes, do it. the Chrysler has been out of production, for many years, and parts are hard to find.

Anything I should be looking for when I check out the Johnson? Telltale signs of a lemon? I don't want to end up with two non-working outboards. :)

Re: Swap 100 Johnson for 105 Chrylser

The Johnson 100HP motors bult from 1966-1968 had electric shift gearcases. I personally like the system but some of the critical parts are getting very spendy. My experience with one previous owner who told me the gearcase needed rebuilding on the motor I was interested in buying worked out okay. After negotiating what we both thought was a fair price for the motor, I determined the only thing wrong with the gearcase was the PO had used the wrong gear oil. After servicing it properly, it worked flawlessly for the ten years I owned it. I currently have a 1968 Johnson 100 that is inop due to a deteriorated engine wiring harness (NLA) that forum guru Joe Reeves told me is common for that era motor due to a change in OMC's supplier. Good luck with your project!

I have a little more info. It's a 1972 Johnson with model number V4TL-13A.
It is electric shift and 4 cylinder. Still waiting to hear if the controls are included in the sale price.

Re: Swap 100 Johnson for 105 Chrylser

It's a little overdue but I wanted to post an update. I went to look at the Johnson back in September. She started up fine for the inspection, and came with controls. I brought her home, prepped the boat to accept the "new" motor - had to drill new mounts, fill old holes, weld up a new bracket for the steering assembly, run the electrical, etc - and when I turned the key she just cranked. No backfire, nothing.

Well, after a couple months of trying out various alternatives to get 'er going and scouring the forums here for advice without luck, she finally fired up last night! I know that all the posts on here say not to use starting fluid, but I decided to throw caution to the wind :) Heck, she wasn't running anyway so what was there to lose? Well, that stuff did the trick. She fired up and ran great!

Unfortunately, the boating days for this season are running out here in Michigan. We've been lucky to have unseasonably warm weather but I have a feeling it'll be coming to an end soon. I plan on taking her out this week for a test run though. And at least I now know that our family will be all set for some boating fun come spring 2010! Thanks to everyone that replied.
