I have a 1980 115 HP Johnson without VRO and aquired a Johnson 140 with ID G3613784 with VRO, not sure what year, but is clean & newer with rebuilt Lower unit.

Questions are:
1. What is involved in changing these two engines, Electrically and Mechanically.

2. The 140 does not have a lift eye, were do screwing in a lift eye to attach the chain hoist to lift it?
Thanks,
Rick

Welcome to iboats.

If the main harness connectors are the same, your present controls should work. You should probably replace the old Hot Horn with the newer piezo Alarm. Battery connections are the same. You'll need to remove the steering link and unscrew the nut holding the steering cable to the motor. Then support the motor and unbolt the clamps. Lift the motor and swing it away, then pull out the steering cable and it's free. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and the cable won't be so long.

The best place to lift the motor is at the flywheel. The factory flywheel puller comes with an eye that screws into the center hole. You can substitute with a stout steering wheel puller and an eye bolt.

If you have a way to hoist the motor, great. But a tongue jack works too. Crank the bow all the way down to get the motor as high in the back as possible. Hang the motor in a safe manner. Then crank up the trailer jack. That'll lower the back of the boat more than enough to get it off.

Getting the new one on is pretty much the opposite. Use a good quality marine selaer for the inside and outside of the transom (bolts). Ultra Silicones work very well. Then connect the oil tank hose, purging the air. Connect the oil level alarm wires. Run 50:1 until you are certain that it is drawing oil. Mark the oil tank and look for the level to drop and you're good to go to straight gas.

Good luck.

Welcome to iboats Rick!

If the engines are of the same vintage, basically pulling one off and setting the other on would do it. But it would be nice to know the year of the 140. It would have to be a '84 or later. Post the model number and we can tell you.

At the shop, I use a lifting eye that uses the holes in the flywheel. I've known some guys to use straps to make a sling around the lower engine pan to lift with. You might take a look on top of the engine and see if there are a holes into which eye-bolts could be screwed into.
