Hi guys!

First post here, I’ve done a lot of searches but couldn’t find anything so forgive me if I ask something that has been answered before.

I have a 89 Johnson 20hp which always starts on the first pull but now it has a broken gas wire and a worn gas handle and broken dead man’s ”button”.

So I’ve found a really cheap 25hp Johnson from 82 and I wonder if parts from the 82 engine is interchangeable with my 89? Can I swap tillers and just bolt the tiller from the 82 on my 89 and connect the gas wire and other cables? Would be great if I could use the 82 for parts but would like to be 100% sure it works before I buy it.

If the 82 is out of question, is there a certain period where parts are interchangeable? Like 86-92 or other?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your respons racerone!

I am sceptic too so I am still trying to determine which model years I can use as substitute for my 89 20hp Johnson.

I know there was a change in rating in hp in 85/86 but as I believe it, that was just a change to rate the hp on the props, not a real technical change of the engines.

Well, my search continues!

I have now also found a package with two cheap 30/35 Rudes from ”early 80’s” and they look very much like my engine but I just have to make sure they suit my needs before I part with my hard earned cash.

All the best!

The older tillers use a gear system for the throttle. that will not interchange with the newer system that uses a cable.
