I am having a hard time finding a used lower unit for the 97 Johnson 130HP engine (J130TLEU). I saw some lower unit on Ebay that are farely inexpensive, but they are for older models (82-89). Will the lower unit fit on mine and what modifications if any will I have to perform to it to make it fit my enginer. Any advise would be helpful. If any other years would also fit, let me know.

Re: Swaping lower units 130HP Johnson

On my 1996 130 hp measuring from the top of the waterpump housing seal to tip of the driveshaft was right at 19.5 inchs. I also have a 1996 150 that measures around 18.5 inchs, I have read here that if you change out the shift shaft you can use a v6 gear case. I don't think so, I tried to put the 130 L/U on the 150 and it would not pull up, if you are going the other way (which I did not try) your drivehaft is going to engage the powerhead right at 1 inch less which may or may not be a problem. That is for 1996 I have not owned any 1997 so it may not apply to your's, I was thinking that they were the same, and back to about 87 was same unit as far as v6s go. That same gear case housing and gear set is used up to 200hp maybe even 225. The new bomb motors all use the same gear case now from 40 hp to 200.

the TL is a 20 inch (long) shaft.
yours should also be a newer 2 piece shaft (upper & lower). older were 1 piece.
there is also the gear ratio.
up to 1994. check your prop size.
TL 20in (long)= 2.00 V4 housing/prop (13 to 14)
TX 25in (XL - extra long)= 2.25 V6 housing/prop (14 to 15).
the reason for the gear the change was to turn the larger prop.
-
i dont know if an earlier model will fit, but if it did you would most likely have to make sure the water pump is of the newer version.
-
so lets say it did than any 90 to 120/140 V4
20 inch would be the same gear 2.00.
-
if you found a later V4 model with the V6 housing & 2 piece drive shaft that was a 25in (XL) with the 2.25 gear - you could then just swap the upper drive shaft with yours & get new props.

----------------
a standard V6 has a 1.86 gear, it will bolt up but throw everything off because of the gear ratio difference.

anyway hope that helps & if im wrong than someone will correct me.

That 130 uses a v6 gear case and prop shaft, as far as i can tell the only difference is the driveshaft and shiftshaft are slightly longer on the 130, the water intake holes on the 130 is more like one big hole, as opposed to a row of four on the v6, and the v6 case has speedometer hole in leading edge 130 does not. Both use same impeller, housing ect. I have run the same 24 raker on both boats (1150 lb each) and either motor will turn close to 6000 but the v6 is 10 mph faster with the same prop, so maybe there is a difference in gear ratio, but it could be due to the jack plate and hull differences too. I still say "take your's apart and see whats wrong with it rather than take a chance on getting a good one on ebay, or one that wont fit". I am usually not this adament but I just went through all this on my own boats, and I also went to some online parts sellers and checked parts numbers to find both supposedly use same driveshaft, but the tape measure don't lie, I am not sure about some of these retailers. As best as I can remember it is only about 8 bolts to remove that L/U, hint be sure and get the one furthest back on the shift shaft linkage or it will be 9. Then you can measure for yourself then send some questions to ebay sellers and get them to measure their's like I did. One inch difference any way you measure it.
