In another post I thought I was having flooding issues with a 95' Force 40 HP. Turns out I wasn't getting any spark from either plug. So I'm figuring the problem lies within the ignition/electrical system. I haven't tested any of the components yet but I'm guessing power pack. My father had to have it replaced once after it sat up for a few years. He gave me the boat and motor last fall and know it seems the power pack has failed me as well. I've pulled the power pack and coils and started cleaning all the the terminals yesterday evening. There was quite a bit of corrosion especially at the starter solenoid. I will eventually get around to putting the power pack back in and start doing some testing. Busy weekend though.

Anyways in the meantime, my wife's ex husband came over to pick up the step daughter while I was taking a look at the motor last night. He had just bought a running 40hp Force for the lower unit. Said I could come over and pick up the motor and take it for free. Went to go pick it up this morning and it's a 99' and has a different ignition system than mine. But I took it home anyways for a case of beer. I don't think I'm up to the task but he seemed to this I could maybe retrofit my motor with his motor's electrical/ignition components. I'm leaning toward not going that route and just go ahead and buy the correct power pack for my motor and part this other one out to cover the cost of the new power pack.

Just wondering if has anyone undertaken a project like this before and if it is even possible?

First go through and test the electrical.
Kill switch??

The parts look like they would just swap over,MAYBE??
Give it a try,your labor cost O$

The lower unit's the same just give him yours and take the motor???

He already took the lower unit. I picked it up this morning minus the lower. I've considered putting my lower on the the 99' and going that route. But I know mechanically mine runs great, I just have to solve my ignition/electrical issues. It ran great all summer, I think I just need to replace the power pack.

This other motor on the other hand, while he said it was running when he bought it, he thinks there's an issue with the reeds.

The ignition/electrical don't look alike as well. My 95' has a switchbox/powerpack with leads that go to the coils, the 99' has the cdm module type powerpack coils.

Like I said, it'd be a retrofit for sure. I'd have to find a way to mount the cdm's to the bracket that the coils in my 95' mount to. On the 99' the cdm's bolt up to the block.

I just think that the retrofit option is going to be more work than necessary. I was really hoping his motor was gonna be the same because I wasn't in the mood to buy a new powerpack but parting this other motor out could potentially pay for my powerpack plus some.

Just curious what others here thought. I'm a little mechanically inclined but a complete newbie when it comes to working on outboards. He seemed to thing it was a doable swap and said he'd seen similar swaps done but I dunno.

Kill switch??

Yes, I've checked and double-checked the kill switch lol. Not so lucky this time. I once went and bought a new battery because I thought I had a dead one at the dock. Went to the Walmart and bought a new battery and headed back to the boat ramp. Hooked up the new battery and still nothing. I was about to head back home when I noticed I wasn't in neutral, duh. Lesson learned. Being in neutral and check kill switch are first on my checklists lol.
