Hey guys quick question. I've got a 1972 125hp johnson that goes like stink, the only problem is last time I took it in for a service the mechanic said the carbs were looking a bit worn. He said they'll work but they'll hick up a bit. the boat ran beautiful in the summer, but I'm thinking, what years of carb's can be swapped into this engine? I've heard this motor is a bit rare, and I'm just curious for next season. Thanks guys.

I'm not sure what he means by a bit worn.
Ocassionally run some seafoam thru them in your gas to clean them and de-carb the motor.
They can be rebuilt with a kit available from any Johnson/Evinrude dealer.

"look a bit worn"??

Too vague to be useful, but vague enough to make me very suspicious.

yea that's kind of what I thought. He did replace the "spring" on the carbs because that was apparently worn out as well. The part was like 7 bucks so what ever, but I was just curious about swapping, because I have an older evinrude about a 68-71 100hp kickin' around for parts and I was just curious if those carbs would fit and do a better job than the "worn out" carbs. thanks alot guys.

The only place that carb can wear out is where the throttle shaft passes through the carb body. If the carb linkage is not in sync, in other words, if one carb is slightly open at idle you will get that hiccup, or lean spit back. If the engine is doing this, with the engine running at idle, loosen the throttle link screw. This will let both carbs snap fully closed. See if the hiccup goes away. I'm betting it will.

and with most carbs, especially fixed jet ones the idle fuel or air getting can be altered some to compensate for throttle shaft wear.
I am with JB
its very suspicious. sounds more like a tech that does not understand carbs than a worn carb.
I have guys that will put 1000-1500 hours a year on the things and never seen wear that bad. not saying it cant happen. it does occasionally. but usually it can be compensated for.

Thanks so much you guys, your more helpful than you'll ever konw. It has been hiccuping during idle and when I go to from about half to full throttle it will hiccup again. I'll losen the throttle link screw and go from there. Thanks alot again guys!!
