I recently purchased a used 20' pontoon with a 25 hp johnson that has some running problems. What I'm needing to know is that if I upgrade engines to around a 50 hp do I need to change the controls as long as I stay with a johnson or evinrude?

OceanBum,
Yes, I changed my 1991, 25 horse power Johnson to a 1983, 70 horse power Johnson and used the same controls on it and it worked good. Just make sure you have both the remote control and motor in neutral before you crank it up. Let us know how it works for you. Take care, Bob:)

Oceanbum,
What I meant to say is slip fit your control cables comming from the remote control to the engine with both the motor and engine in nuetral point.

NO...BUT....

you should try and keep the replacement motor with the same style electrical plugs...or you will have to buy an adapter, and they can run $180 or more!!

up to about 1995/1996 they used a big red plugat the motor...after that they used several pigtail connectors on the end of the harness..

PS: I am not sure if the ever made a 25 hp with VRO, but I think the controls were pretty generic across the HP offerings in the same year for remote motors..
good luck
