i have a 1960 glasspar that i just got, and it has a 1977 merc 1150 in absolute mint condition. i would really like to get a motor of 1960 vintage, preferably a merc again, maybe.. heres my question...

how far back in years can i go with mercs and still use the steering and controls that are in boat now. id like to leav them in if possible. they are so silky smooth.. like new

if i DO go with another merc and get older controls, will they be silky smooth like the ones i have now, and what about the steering, it now has the standard cable/screw style like most boats now have... can i use that with a older merc...

what online rescources are there to look up info on older mercs.... i usually have evinrudes, but this old merc i got is beautifull, and now ive been bitten by the bug, i gotta get more..

thanks in advance

mike
phatmanmike@yahoo.com

Re: swapping in an older merc

Hello:

As long as the controls fit and work on your 77 Merc 1150, they will work on Mercs as old as 1959 acording to the pictures I have, although I am not totally sure. But I have an option that you might think about. The top, face, Wrap around cowlings are interchangeable back to 68 with the motor you have now. If it were me, I would get it painted the white color of 1960 Mercs and get the appropreate cowlings.

Here is a picture of a 1960 - 61 70hp inline 6

http://www.myfishingpictures.com/showphoto.php?photo=16443

I don't think it would be hard to get the 77 1150 to look like that and still have all of the advantages of the newer motors.

Hope this helps you out bud.

Craig
