I am helping a friend get a 1980 Mercury 40 with Thunderbolt Ignition going. We found two wires coming out of the switch box assembly (33 24911) to a connector block missing insulation and fried to almost severed. We soldered in new wires but I am wondering if the unit is no good and that is what caused the wires to fry or what. Any thoughts?

Re: Switch Box Assembly wires burnt

Only thing that would cause the wires to fry would be over voltage or a short.

They had to get pretty hot to melt that insulation.

Id be sure to check all connections everywhere and be sure to pay special attention to your ground system. If it burnt there, it could have burnt elsewhere in the harness.

Was the damaged wiring on entry or exit of the switchbox? In other words a stator/trigger lead, or a coil wire lead?
