Does the engine run without this switch installed? what does it do?

You can run the engine without the temp switch, but if the engine overheats you will not know it until it seizes up. The purpose of the switch is to sound a horn in the control box if the engine overheats before the engine is damaged. You should really have the warning system operational.

Are you talking about the half-choke temperature switch on the top of the block near the hook or the overheat temperature switch in the engine head?
