Hi,

I'm new to boats. In cars there is the concept of a switched 12v line which is live when the ignition is on. Do boats with an outboard have a similar concept? If so does it work based on the key in the remote control unit?

If not then are things like lights, horn, speedo, fuel gauge all permanently live?

Thanks

Yes, the basics are controlled off the key switch.

Unlike most road vehicles they also have a “live”, direct connected circuits to power navigation equipment, stereos, bilge pump, etc.

The switched +12VDC wire on an outboard is provided by the acc terminal on the ign switch and is usually purple in color. However, it is normally used only for low power items, that need to operate with the engine, like gauges.

Normally you would have an accessory switch to run stereos, GPSs, lights etc. I like them to have a master acc switch, so I can turn them all off together. That switch is wired directly to the battery.
