I want to remove all the controls off the '78 Mercury 200 that was given to me. I have the throttle and shift cable off, along with the electrical.

Ideally, I'd like to put a tiller handle on it and a single button on the front of the motor for electric start. Right now I'm trying to determine what does what, and what goes where.

The main harness plug on the side of the motor only has 5 pins, so there can't be much to it. I know one must be power, one ground, one for the choke, and one to the solenoid. That just leave me with one wire unaccounted for, and I'm thinking it may be something to do with the charging system.

Here are the questions I have.

What pins are what?

Is this motor equipped with the breakerless ignition?

And has anyone done this conversion before?

I found two wiring diagrams:
wiring diagram 1and wiring diagram 2

I'm just not sure which diagram is the one I need.

Thanks for any help

Re: switching from controls to a tiller

for starters, look for two individual HV coils mounted on the eng..this should give you the first hint that its breakerless.another is, are there any wires comming from underneath the fly- wheel if there are there comming from the statot & trigger ,if you have those its breakerless,as
your #2 diag. shows.any help ?
