I hope I can explain this clearly. I live in area where the state lakes (PA) are limited to 18 HP, while most federal waters are unlimited HP. I presently have '94 Merc on my pontoon boat with Quicksilver controls, etc. I 'inherited' a '79 Merc/70 HP with the boat. Previous owner claims the unit runs well but has trouble shifting. I'm having that checked out.

My question involves how complicated will it become to swicth these motors back and forth when going to the various lakes? The labor doesn't scare me, it's the controls and connections I'm concerned about.

PS: It's my understanding the 70HP unit was on this boat within the past two years. It was supposed to have been deinstalled last summer(2002).

Re: Switching Motors

I'm in the same situation with the switching of motors. I have a Evinrude 10 HP for PAFBC lakes and a Merc 20HP for rivers and such. I also have 2 seperate control boxes, so I never even thought about trying to switch. I did think about mounting both, but have not tried that yet.

Re: Switching Motors

Yep, my kids all keep hounding me to mount them both, but 90% of my boating is on the 18 HP lakes. I guess I'll have to wait until shop evaluates bigger motor before I try to deal with the switching task.
