Hey all,
I just recently purchased a 2000 25hp Mercury outboard, short shaft, manual start. The previous (original) owner bought the outboard with the factory tiller installed. At some point, he switched the outboard over to remote steering/controls. I am now in the process of putting the factory tiller pack on the motor. I have already attached the handle to the motor and hooked up the throttle/shifting cables. Everything is back to normal, except I have to re-install the steering friction assembly.
After some research, I have heard that it is only possible by removing the powerhead. is this true?
I have very limited working knowledge of outboard mechanics, and if this is true, it may be outside of my area of expertise. Can/Should this be done by someone with limited knowledge like myself, or is there a potential for disaster?
I have attached the diagram from a service manual I purchased. After looking at where the main screw (#10) feeds into the main swivel bracket (#11), is it possible to lay the motor on its side, and feed the screw from below the clamp?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again,
Mike
