SX Cobra or not a cobra?

I've got a 1999 Volvo 5.0L Gi with what the manual says is a Penta SX-M drive. The skeg is damaged and I'm looking for a skeg guard to cover it. But most all the guards say SX (not Cobra). The manual says nothing about cobra, it just says sx-m, but the sticker on the top of my outdrive says SX Cobra.

So do I have a cobra, or do I have a cobra sticker?

And what is the difference?

Around that time Volvo Penta and OMC had a joint venture building outdrives. Volvo Penta eventually took over so some drives around that time say Cobra and some don't. If I understand correctly they are essentially the same. I have a Cobra sticker on mine. It is an SX-M outdrive though.

your drive may not be not a 1999 version, your hull may be.
the last of the cobra-SX was about 1996 as thats about when volvo bought OMC outright and everything went to simply SX.
even as early as 1998 the propshafts changed and the older cobra-SX props would not fit the 98.
difference, not much. a picture would be nice.
some of the early joint venture stuff still used nuts on the trim cyl anchor pins.
the later SX stuff used C clips.

Forget about what the manuals calls it for a minute. What does the sterndrive itself call it? Look at the tag on the port side of the upper, just behind the trim cylinder near the front of the drive. Shoujld have model number, serial number, and spec number.

Re: SX Cobra or not a cobra?

Thanks for all the replies. I looked and the plate on the side says SX-M. So no cobra for me.

Don S: I just posted another question concerning a discharge tube. Would you mind taking a second and looking at it? We'll be below freezing on friday night and this is the one thing that's worrying me about my winterization. I think I'm ok, but would feel better with some confirmation. unfortunately, of the 28 people who read the post so far, no one would respond.

Thanks for any insight.
