I destroyed my outdrive this summer. I came across an new outdrive with a different ratio.
Is it compatible with my V8?
What differences will this cause?
Would I simply need to switch to a duo prop or just change pitch

You'll have to buy a different propset possibly. I think it would be fine.

From what the local repair facilities are telling me is the 1.79 is geared for a 6cyln and a much lighter boat. Are the just trying to sell me the more expensive option. The new 1.60 cost approximately $6500. I found the 1.79 for $3800 on ebay

Woah you better shop around

That's the problem I'm having... Hence the reasoning I'm searching for alternatives. Would you know of any distributors or another direction to look?

Try and shop around for a donor boat....SX drives are very hearty they can take 500hp so a little v6 or 4 cyl boat will not be run to death..Just check the drive for oil metal contaminates and go from there..It should be easy to find that drive has been in circulation sines 98.
