SX-M Drive alignment

Hi all, I'm trying to understand the importance of using the VP alignment tool to re-install the drive. I'm planning to pull the drive and poractivly replace the bellows. Common sense tells me that if the drive shaft slides in and out easy then it's aligned. Am I missing something? Thanks

It can slide in and out easily and still be off!!
The tool,grease the end, slide it in and then straight back out. The end should have marks on it showing the splines in the coupler.
The lines should be even/equal on all sides of the coupler.
If they are heavier on one side your gonna put a lot of strain/wobble on one side of the coupler. Possibly causing premature failure???
It can be a pain especially if the motor needs to be shifted side to side??

The alignment check also tells you if something has changed, like a motor mount failing, or a stringer getting soft, or the transom failing.

You also don't need the "Volvo" alignment bar. It's the same as Merc and OMC when they existed. You can find them on ebay all day long for 40 bux or less.

It's a lot easier to check alignment than to pull the engine and replace the coupler.

You need to start a new thread with your question. Include your engine info when you do, the same thing doesn't work on all engines.
