The outdrive was removed to replace billows and bearing and it was discovered the pivot housing has nicks and chunks missing on the mating surface due to previous owner prying the drive off. I want to replace the housing and found two different part numbers that might fit. (I cannot see the original number as it was also xxxed up. I found part #3857278 and also 3857974. Would either of these work? My local parts dealer was of no help so I though I would come to the experts.
Thanking you all in advance.

It may not actually be necessary to replace this because there is no gasket between the pivot housing and the drive, so there is no sealing function that would be impaired by the previous owner's destructive maintenance practices, unless it is the surface by the water tube gasket (that odd shaped o ring that is also used on the OMC Cobra). . The drive shaft bellows seals by the upper gear housing bearing carrier pushing into it. Post up a pic, you might be able to fix what you see with some of the epoxy based metal filler putties. If you can get a used one, they are not bad to replace as long as the hinge pins come out. If you do replace it, take a good look at the D/s bellows while you're at it.

I did find a part #3857974, used around $400,a grand new! Here are some photos of the current bell housing. Would it hurt to put it back together with something like black RTV, or maybe a cobra gasket and RTV? Do you all think I can use the one I have here? Thanks

As long as that o ring gasket fits in the water tube area and seals well (I coat it with OMC triple guard grease to keep it in the groove, I think you can use that pivot housing. I would also coat the mating surface of the drive where it meets the pivot housing, they sometimes corrode there because Volvo did not use a gasket there. Maybe why the PO pried it off in the first place!

Agreed, just clean it up with a bit of GENTLE wire brushing or sand paper and slap on the OMC triple guard grease on both mating faces after cleaning up the "O" ring groove and fitting a new "O" ring
