SX-M Propshaft Housing/Bearing Carrier?

I have a 1995 3.0GSPHUB Volvo, with an SX-M Drive, with 1.66 gears I believe. It is raining so I won't be able to check until the storms let up. I made a mistake, and removed the bearing carrier/housing without measuring first, because at that time I didn't know any better. There was no shim inside. Does this just mean I need a new carrier, and that's it? I'm afraid I've made a huge mistake that's gonna cost a ton.

When removing the carrier, I broke what I would call a little ear on the top, and when trying to remove a bolt on the side of the carrier that goes into something that I have no clue what it is, it broke off. If I'm not mistaken that was a star bolt/screw. In the first picture I attached, I put the "ears" in a red box, and the other photo shows the long... shaft? that the broken off bolt went into. I'm fully prepared to buy another one, but I just hope I won't have to fool with shimming the carrier. Somebody please help.

Yes, you need a new carrier, and yes it has to be shimmed and adjusted for rolling torque.
Make sure of what drive you have. The HU models were not SX-M, and 1.66 is not the gear ration for a 3.0L. You should have a 1.85:1 ratio. The SX-M didn't come out until 97 I think.

Re: SX-M Propshaft Housing/Bearing Carrier?

Thanks for the quick reply Don. I know I have an HU model motor. And I know it is an SX-M motor. Now that you mention it, I think you may be right and it is a 1.85. My boat is a 95 Regal Valanti 176 SE, but I don't know the history of this boat or anything like that. My understanding is that the lower units on SX drives are the same, you just have to match the drive ratio. I've been wrong before though, and bound to be again.

On shimming the carrier, how would I do that? Is it a similar process to shimming a starter, as in, shim until rolling torque is where it is desired? I looked through the service manual for an SX-M, but I got a little lost reading the jumbled up instructions.

The shimming and rolling torque adjusting is absolutely nothing like a starter. I went to Volvo dealer tech school to learn how to do the job and use the special tools needed to do the job.

Find the proper DRIVE model number and the proper manual to go with it.

Forums are just like a computer, garbage in, garbage out.

Close, but not exactly the same.

Re: SX-M Propshaft Housing/Bearing Carrier?

Okay. Regardless of drive, the propshaft housing/bearing carrier is still going to be Volvo P.N. 3858051. I know where to look for a manual, and I happen to have the SX-M manual conveniently downloaded on my PC. I know this is a Volvo Penta SX-M DRIVE. I might have gotten the gear ratio wrong, but I have since made the trek out in the rain and made sure of the ratio, which is in fact 1.85. Regardless of whether the drive is 95 or a 97 or whatever the case is, I know this is an SX-M 1.85:1 lower unit. When I said they are the same, I meant that they are basically interchangeable, even from SX to DP, because the upper unit is the same.
