SX-M shift cable crimped.....am I in trouble?

So......while trying to get the drive off (still stuck) I was raising and lowering the unit just trying to work it loose. At one point I accidentally let the drive come down and pinch the shift cable, bad enough to cut the rubber housing and bend the cable itself about 30 degrees. The bend is about one inch from the end of the cable where it becomes a threaded rod.

I haven't put it back together yet because the drive is still stuck - but does anyone think I just destroyed the shift cable when I pinched it?

I carefully bent it back straight again - I'm assuming the cable is designed to slide in and out inside the black rubber housing?

Bond-o,
I'm looking all over the volvo penta site but I can't find the part number for the shift cable - its a SM-X 1.51. Do you happen to know which cable I need?
Thanks again

you'll need to pull the cable out of the transom, or take it off of the shifter - theres numbers about a foot or two from one of the ends that'll tell you the length and model number

not a bad job - did mine today and it was only around $30

oh - save the ends! the new cable does not come with them

Thanks John- in reading, seems you just disconnect the cable at both ends, tie a nylon string to the outdrive end and pull the cable from inside the boat? Install the new cable using some soap, do the measurements, and that's it right?

I guess I'll go back out to the boat tomorrow and look for those numbers- thanks

Re: SX-M shift cable crimped.....am I in trouble?

Theres always a number on it and that is your measurement. Mine was original OEM and it had the footage on it, Teleflex ones have the length in the model number. Sometimes the cable goes in areas that you can't get to, so sometimes I have to tape the new one onto the old and pull it through those tough areas - I wouldn't just pull it unless you know the run is easy (mine was very easy Regal 1950 LSC). There are different quality cables and my parts counter guy says he recommends the premium on Volvo's since they are exposed to water.

Something I always forget till I get it all apart is you just need to loosen (not remove) the bolt for the strap that holds the cable in the outdrive - the strap will slide over so you can easiliy pull the cable. I've not tied anything to run it through the transom - theres a tube that the cable runs though straight to the od, you'll see it when you pull the cable from the transom - everyone I've ran went right in, but i guess the string thing would be a precaution. Remove the nuts from the new cable before running. Hardest part, which isn't really hard is put the shifter in N and make sure the threaded connector at the drive is centered to N

Thanks again John- Sounds pretty straight forward. I'll be sure to pay the extra $ to get a good quality cable so I'm not doing this again in 2-3 years.
