Ok so i tried to do the sync and link today but in the process of getting the cam to line up and the carbs to open up fully of which neither was happening which is why i thought to do this. I ran into this problem for me to have the carbs open up all the way at wot the cam doesnt line up at all i havent tried to start the engine yet since the cam isnt lined up. The roller is just barely touching the cam in the setting it is in now. I cant get the tie bar to adjust far enough to open the butterflys all the way there is just not enough threads on it. I took this picture in hopes of someone telling me if it is the right cam or not. The cam has a mark on it you can clearly see and then it has one on it that looks like someone had put on there with a screw driver and the rolller is in between the two right now in this picture. I am unsure where or what to do next since i dontknow if this is the right cam and tie bar. One other thing i know i need to fix is the ball sockets are cracked and if you tighten the back up nut to much then bar comes out due to the crack opening. I noticed this today as i was finishing. What i could do.

Re: Sync and link

i have the same problem, If i end up adjusting it to be able to open the throttle wide open the damn thing idles at like 1300 rpms and if i adjust it to idle a 900 to a 1000 it only gets about 3/4 throttle, I actually have been debating to adjust it to get wot and then just lightly grind the lobe at the very bottom of the cam so it idles properly, everything else inbetween would work normally

Do not grind the cam! Your problem is simply adjustment!

Detach the ball link. The roller is on a cam screw. With the throttle cam set with the line at the roller center, loosen the nut and turn the screw until the roller JUST touches the cam. Now tighten the nut. This places the carb at the correct setting for idle, which is with the butterfly cracked slightly open. At idle, the line on the cam will be below the roller as shown in the photo.

Now, you reattach the ball link and set the rod length so that the butterflies open level or close to it.

Timing must be set correctly because if it is advanced too far at WOT, the idle will also be too fast. IDLE and WOT are more dependent on timing than throttle position. Once timing is set correctly, adjust idle speed by adjusting the stop screw and nut at the bottom of the timing tower on the throttle advance lever.

Read the sticky in FAQs again and understand it before synching the engine.

Re: Sync and link

Ok frank thank you so much i thought i misunderstood what i was reading but i am so glad to know i was on the right track. I will set up to get the timing checked then and adjust the idle speed and hopefully i will be good. Before i started this wot on the butterflies was at maybe a 1/4 open not anywhere near the horizontal position.
