i agree with "merc140" stick with the manufacturers oil that built your motor.they know your motor and what it needs more than anyone else.

Synthetic blend vs 100% Synthetic ???

Seems the world gets ever more complicated everytime I go to Warmart. I went to pick up a gallon of 2-cycle oil to use in a 1983 50HP Merc I just purchased. I found 3 kinds of Pennzoil 2-cycle oil: Premium Outboard and Mult-purpose 2-Cycle Oil (I use to use this in my old 28 HP Evinrude); Pennzoil Premium Plus with Synthetic Blend ($9.95 gal); and Pennzoil 100% Synthetic ($19.95 gal).

I'm sure a couple of these puppies are made for the new oil injected engines. Is is okay for me to use the Pennzoil with Synthetic Blend in my old 1983? I have a feeling the old Multi-purpose is on the way out and the New Synthetic stuff on the way in.

Thanks,

Terry G.

Terry G.

Do yourself a favor, Stick with the "Quick Silver" oil. It is made for your motor and in the long run is better for it.

Craig

Re: Synthetic blend vs 100% Synthetic ???

We have been doing tests on motors for years and I can tell you this -- the Pennzoil Blend is as good as, if not better than, OE oil. We completed a 100 hour test late last fall on an Evinrude V6 crossflow and used the Pennzoil Blend exclusively. The motor was loaded to a max of 5100 RPM (lugged). We did not decarbon and ran no additives like Carbon Guard or Ring Free. At 100 (actualy 103) hours we took the pistons out and they were perfect. No stuck rings or scuffing. No excessive carbon build up. No excessive heat on the inside of the dome. All bearings were perfect. The compression did not change 1 pound after the break-in.

About 10 years ago we did a similar test except it was a 500 hour test on a V4. Same results.

We ran pure synthetics vs. blends in the race motors and found the blends to be just as good. At half the price (as you noted). As a matter of fact, we found that a certain race oil smoked and carboned up and the Pennzoil did not.

Bottom line -- we do all testing with OE oil or Pennzoil Blend. ONLY! My personal motors get nothing but Pennzoil Blend. I guess I'm lucky -- our Wal-Mart sells it for 9.47 a gallon.

Good luck!

Not knowing anything about your motors history or running stats, I would say if your motor is running good to continue doing what you have been doing. As you get more hours on it, keep an eye on the compression. That will be your guide.

Good luck!
