I am toying with the idea of using a synthetic engine oil in my newly rebuilt 470 and the 4.3. Now I understand the differences between the two of them , but is it recommended versus using a standard petroleum, and the price is a big difference as well. Lend me some ideas and thoughts. Vince

Re: Synthetic Engine Oil???

you can use whatever oil you like

merc recommends 25W-40 in all sterndrive engines, catalyzed engines require mercruiser full synthetic catalyzed engine oil

second choice is SAE 30

as long as you maintain regular oil/filter changes, using conventional or synthetic that meets the wieght requirements you should be fine

If you don't want to use what the manufacturer suggests, then here are a few links to other oil threads to help assist you in choosing your oil.

They all come down to the same thing, people posting something like
"I use ___(Fill in the blank)___ and it works great"
