synthetic oil

Someone suggested I use MerCruiser synthetic 20W40 for my oil change this year. I have 2004 MerCruisers 4.3 L MPIs. I just bought the boat this summer so I do not know what kind of oil is in there now. Is it OK to replace with synthetic if the prior oil was not synthetic? Is is preferable to go with the synthetic oil? The engines have 250 hours on them, if that matters.
Thanks

Re: synthetic oil

Pretty much personal preference. It isn't going to hurt anything to switch over , unless you have leaks existing. If you have oil leaks now they will be worse with the syn oil. I use synthetics in motor and drive.:D

Ayuh,.... May as well get in Early,..... :D

Any motor oil you can buy off the shelf at Wally World, or Anywhere else would no doubt run in your motor,..
Just Fine....

If you want to run Syn-oil,... There's No reason not too,.... I do...

Well since everyone has to have an opinion, Boat oil doesn't degrade like car oil. It gets contaminated. and sits in your engine with all of this contamination. What kind of oil probably doesn't matter as much as how often it is changed.

Re: synthetic oil

Too me if I only changed my oil once a season Id run syn. 350-500 hours. Wont break down like reg oil. If I changed my oil twice a season when it would be a waste. All based on what/how you use it! Only way to get the full protection of syn is to start off with it. Like seasoning a cast iron pan.

I didn't realize that this was already addressed in previous threads. I'll do a search first before posting , but your responses have been helpful. Since I put on well over 100 hours this season, it sounds like I should be changing my oil more than once a year.
Cheifalen, 35 inches sounds like you hooked one of the dolphins. That's a big stripper!

No once a year will do just fine. 100 hours nothing. Believe me. Buy the shell.

Want to spend a little more buy a name brand.

I don't believe you need the syn.
