Synthetic oils in outboards - Can I use them?

I have a 25hp & 3.3hp Mercury outboard. I would like to start using synthetic oil in them (gas & lower unit). We use alot of synthetics in critical industrial equipment where I work & the plant engineers swear they offer far superior lubrication properties (higher film strength etc?). Does this same arguement hold true for outboard synthetic oils? If so can you recommend some good brands to use. Thank you.
