System Check Gauge Tach Compatibility

Hey all, I'm looking to add some instrumentation to my boat to hopefully give me some warning if it plans on blowing up again. I have a 2000 50 HP 2-stroke Johnson. I verified under my dash that I have an 8-pin female connector, wiring looks like this:

Tan/Yellow,Gray,Black,Purple,Tan/Black,Tan,Tan/Orange,Tan/Blue

So I'd like to add a System Check gauge and see that some come w/ a built in tach. Am I safe to assume I can get one of these Johnson combo gauge / tach's with the 8-pin connectors, plug and play and be good to go? I think the gauge that was originally installed w/ my motor was just the System Check, but I'd really like to have the tach as well. Thanks.

Go see your local BRP dealer and he should be able to help you out. If you have just the system check gauge now the tach/gauge should work out fine.

Yes, as Boobie says....just unplug the 4 light gauge, and plug in the tach.

You can get these tachs from numerous places besides an OMC dealer. Faria makes one, for instance.

EBay is good if the tach being sold is new.

Re: System Check Gauge Tach Compatibility

I'm guessing about the engine originally coming with a system check gauge. It came off a pontoon and when it was rigged to my boat the gauge didn't come with it. I browsed a part diagram and it looks like mine would've come with just the 4 light gauge. Just wanted to make sure that I could upgrade to the tach combo since they're pretty pricey, even on Ebay. I noticed a couple on Ebay that have a dial setting that can be adjusted to either 5 or 6. Any guidelines to figuring out which number to go with? Thank you both.

I can get Faria, brand new, Systems Check tachs (3 models) for no more than $140.00.
Just so you can compare prices.....

I believe (absolutely not sure) that the pole setting for your engine will be 6 poles. Someone here will confirm.....

Looks like if you have the electric start model, the tach will work fine.

Re: System Check Gauge Tach Compatibility

Got my tach from Ebay today. Plugged it in and turned the key to on. Heard a beep and then it looks like System Check did its thing with all lights turning on and then turning off one at at time. I am trying to test out my warning signals so I grounded my tan wire going to the temperature sensor. The overheat light turns on but I get no horn. Tested the low oil by removing the VRO oil level sensor. The low oil light turns on but again no horn. Shouldn't the horn go off? I know the horn's good because of the beeps and I provided it ground directly with the key on and it went off.

On system check you have to have the mtr running for the horn to sound.

Boobie I was wondering about that. OMC manual just said turn the key to on under the VRO testing section. When I fire it up I'll try the test again. Thank you.
