T-stat question

Great forum guys! Just purchased my first boat. It's powered by a '87 Evinrude 88hp V4. It hasn't had much maintenance and I want to get it ready to hit the water. I plan on picking up a manual soon, but I hope to check out the t-stats tomorrow. I just need someone to tell me where to look. Thanks in advance.

Re: T-stat question

Marc - I suggest that you wait until you have read the manual and looked at the diagrams. You should also replace the water pump, change the gear oil & put in new plugs. If the heads have never been off you might think about replacing the deflectors.

The t-stats are located under a cover held to its housing by three bolts at the rear of the motor down by the pan. There is a hose comming out of each side (about 1' in diameter I think)one going to each head. The job can be done by the average driveway mechanic but is a real pain.

I have a pair of 1987 V4s & did the t-stats last yr.

You said it SoLittle! What a pain! I wasted lots of time trying to remove the lower section of the cover to try and make it a straight foward job. The middle thermostat bolt sheared off leaving me about 1/4 inch to work with. A little filing and lots of repositioning the ol' trusty vise-grips and I got it out. Thank God I got it all back together. Next, the water pump.

Hey SoLittle, I'm second guessing myself. Is it possible to put the t-stats in backwards in this engine? I got the new type from local OMC dealer. Is there a easy to tell if they're in right?
