I bought a 1996 Johnson 50 controls and all. I hooked the tach up all system check lights come on then go off. All that checks out. I have two extra wires not attached to anything on the harness now. Are these for a voltmeter and trim gauge?

It would help if you would describe the wires in detail..... color, stripes, whatever.

Black purple grey are for a standard (not System Check) tachometer. Black is ground, purple is +12VDC for accessories. I think the white one is trim sender.

So if I buy a trim gauge it will possibly work with the existing wiring?

I would verify the motor has a trim sender and the white wire is the right one. Of course, a water pressure gauge is much more useful than a trim gauge, IMHO. You can trim by feel and sound.
