I just bought a used '89 Mercury 25HP 2-stroke electric start. It has the remote controller, a Quicksilver, and I noticed on the cable coming out of the controller was an extra connector (4-pin). Looking around the web, it appears this is for plugging in a Tach cable. Since these controller cables are probably interchangeable on different years and models, I imagine that just because the connector is there, it doesn't necessarily mean it works with every model. Does anyone know if my model motor works with a tach? I hate to buy the cable and tach only to find it isn't supported.

P.S. First post, great forum! I've already purchased two orders from the store, great selection and prices!

How do I determine if it's equipped with a charging system?

There will be 2 yellow wires from the stator that is under the flywheel that goto a small box with three terminals 1 red, 2 yellow and a gray wire that is the rectifier and then the tach leads at the box will work.
