So my last step in converting from a Stringer drive to this 115hp Evinrude is replacing the Tach. I picked up a decent one (looks nicer then the rest of my guages) and can get it mounted easy enough. I know the wiring can come from the control box, but I'm wondering if I can wire it up a little differently.

Here's the scoop. The wiring on the motor I bought had been cut for installation in it's previous boat. I've spliced the wiring back together but I have access to it all under the splashwell. I also left most of the old wiring in the boat from the I/O (I pulled it all out then when re-running power and ground decided the wiring was in good shape and may come in useful so I put it back in). Instead of coming from the control box, can I run a tach wire from my splice to the tach. It would actually look neater and be easier to run. I've got the OMC manual so I can figure out which wire to use. I guess I'm asking if it HAS to come from the control box?
