Hello, I have just purchased a used boat with a 1979 70HP Evinrude one it. The boat has a Tach but it doesn,t work. Any suggestions where or how to start. I understand I really should have a tach that works. thanks for the help, Rick

Me again Rick..... ;)

Try the link below to iboats mall. Or, visit your local John/Rude dealer.

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...rd&keywords=Tachometer&submit.x=53&submit.y=9

And you understood correctly, you should have a tach. If anything on the dash will tell you how the engine is running, the tach will. And you'll need to know what rpms your running to correctly prop out the rig.

Do you know if the tach doesn't work because its bad or because the rectifier is bad? is the battery charging properly? does your stator have any cracks or a sticky, syruppy substance dripping off of it?

don't know why it doesn't work. Battery is charging fine. stator looks ok...... how do I check the tack gauge to see if that is the problem? thanks to both of you for the reply....

If your battery is charging then your rectifier and stator windings are probably OK. You should check first that the tach is wired up correctly (no wires broken etc.). Your tach should have a 12V feed from the ignition switch, a wire connected to ground, maybe a separate wire for the light inside it and definitely a send wire (normally gray). You should be able to measure an AC voltage of about 5-10V depending on revs between the send wire and ground.

If you have no voltage on the gray send wire check back through the circuit to find the break. I think for your motor (no regulator) the send signal comes directly from the stator winding yellow or yellow/gray wire.

If all the wiring and signals look right then your tach may be dead. You can remove it and get it tested.

Hey Seasport,
thanks for the help. I checked the voltage at the tach and got nothing. Checked the ac voltage at the greay wire comming out of the "wiring post", Not sure if that is the correct term or not, and got 8.?? ac volts.... any suggestions??? Rick

Rick, you mean you measured the voltage at the send terminal of the tach and got nothing but you measured 8V on the gray wire at the terminal strip at the motor? Can you trace the wire from the terminal strip to the tach? Sounds like you have a bad connection or the wire is broken somewhere. Do you have 12V at the tach when the keyswitch is on?

Seasport, I have tried to trace wire but almost impossible. Not sure if it was a good idea or not, but I ran a piece of wire from the terminal strip where the grey wire connects to the tach, started it up and the tach worked. Must be a broken connection somewhere? thanks, Rick

Seasport,
Man I finally found the freakin thing. Grey wire went into the throttle control box, then came out into a plug and dead ended. Gonna get me a male plug tomorrow and fix it. Thanks a bunch for the help. I will probably be askin more quesions later. thanks again, Rick
